Addis Ababa, the capitol city of Ethiopia is a big place with lots of do. Where should you start if you’re visiting or if you’re new to the the area? In this article we’ll cover some of the best things to do, including food, shopping, and recreational activities. If you’re looking to meet someone new to date or hook up with, we’ll also suggest some places to meet new people and apps you can use.
Where to Stay
There are so many hotels in the capital city. It can be overwhelming at times and you definitely want to make sure that the one you choose has a good location and room. The following are some of the top hotels to stay at, and some great options for budget travelers.
Ethiopia Sun Hotel is located in the heart of the city. In terms of rooms, you’ll get plenty with either the double bed (double occupancy) or the king (one occupant). For a small fee, you can book a private bungalow, which can be pretty amazing, especially in a busy city. The rooms at the hotel have wooden floors, full beds and comfy pillows, balconies with fabulous views of the city, and room-to-room wi-fi (it can be slow and unreliable, but it’s there!).
Where to Eat
Abin Dolale is a family run restaurant that serves up modern Ethiopian cuisine in a casual atmosphere. It’s located on 3rd Street next to Abin Aba (The Flaming Fire), and it’s open for lunch every day from 11am to 6pm, as well as brunch on Sundays.
Yegwa is the best way to experience authentic Ethiopian food. You won’t be disappointed. This restaurant, located in Addis Ababa, is an oasis for authentic cuisine, serving up delicious soups, manti (stuffed dumplings), and other authentic dishes. Delicious!
Ethiopian Internet Café (Gizaw)
You may have heard about or even seen Ethiopians use the internet cafes. Well the Ethiopian Internet Café is the best place in the Capital to go to get access to the internet!
How To Get Around
Most of the time, you can hop on a taxi to get you to your destination, but it’s best to get around Addis Ababa by bus if you don’t want to get lost.
Where To Meet People
To meet some of the locals and get to know them a little better, go to the night market. Even if it’s a weeknight you can get some great food and meet some awesome people, and then a few nights later, go to the cool lounge in the Sheraton and listen to some cool beats from some cool Ethiopian DJs. Also don’t forget to check out one of the many cinemas in Addis Ababa.
If you’re looking for a date or someone to hook up with, then the night market is a great place to start. However, dating apps are very popular in Addis Ababa. One of the most popular ones for hookups is called MegaPersonals. If you’re looking for dates or a relationship, then apps like Bumble or Match.com may be better.
Where to Shop
Ethiopia is a very expensive place to live so, if you’re traveling for business or pleasure, expect to spend a little bit of money. Ethiopia is the hub of the former Soviet Bloc, and many of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers are based in the country.
The best place to shop is along Haile Selassie Boulevard in the Hawassa district. This is the main hub for everything fashion and accessories, and you’ll find lots of brand names at more than reasonable prices. The same goes for the leather market where you’ll find lots of nice leather items for reasonable prices.
You’ll also find big markets for foodstuffs. You can find several but we recommend looking for Kosher meat in the markets that sell meat.
